RefSet - Automatic Reference Line and Stakeout Program for Leica TPS

RefSet is a program that is used by underground mine surveyors to control a Leica Total Station to automatically set out most types of underground mining survey mark-ups by reference line or stakeout.

The program can be used by a single person to complete underground survey mark-ups without the need to return to the Total Station to ‘point’ the instrument at the next setout point as the program automatically sets out the current feature and then proceeds to setout the next feature.

The program was originally developed for the Leica TPS1100 instruments in 2003-04 at a minesite in Western Australia and this version of the program has since spread freely throughout the mining industry in Australia.

The original RefSet program was created using the GeoBasic compiler from Leica to create a program that ran only on the TPS1100 series instruments. With the introduction of the TPS1200 series of Total Stations in 2004, Leica discontinued the GeoBasic compiler program, meaning that it was not easy to create a program that would run onboard these instruments.

RefSet Controller has now been developed to solve this problem. RefSet Controller is a version of the program that runs on a Leica CS15 or CS20 controller or a Windows Mobile type PDA device. It will connect to a TPS1200 instrument by either Bluetooth or cable connection and includes all of the features and speed of the original version. For a summary of this version see RefSet Controller.

With the introduction of the Leica Viva TS15 Total Stations in Oct 2010, it again became possible to create a version of RefSet that will run onboard the Total Station as the TS15 instruments use a version of the Windows CE operating system. A version of RefSet has now been developed for the TS15 and for a summary of this version see RefSet. As of Sep 2015 RefSet has also been updated to run on TS16 instruments.
